Facts and Figures
Recycling and Waste Reduction
- Placed numerous recycling containers in easily-accessible places, such as the hotel lobby, for guests to properly dispose of their waste.
- Using recycled paper products with a minimum of 10% post-consumer waste for most print production.
- Identified printer cartridges as controllable elements, leading to recycling and purchasing practices that support socially responsible cartridges.
- Separate used cooking oils to be collected by manufacturers who reuse oils in new consumer products.
- Collect and store more than 1,000 gallons of motor oil each year from the vehicle maintenance area and use it to fuel heaters in the snowmaking maintenance area.
- Salvage construction materials and car parts for reuse or send off as scrap metal.
- Currently switching to 100% recycled toilet paper and 45% recycled material hand towels.
Energy Conservation
- Installed the SolarBee solar panel in Lake Tahoe, to help temper the water for more efficient snowmaking
- Replaced numerous lighting fixtures and more than 3,000 inefficient T12 fluorescent light bulbs in favor of T8 light bulbs.
- Converted 3,344 incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent reducing the average wattage used form 75 to 25.
- Installed motion sensor light switches in meeting rooms and janitorial closets.
- Converted 300 exit signs from 40 watts to 1 watt bulbs.
- Added six inches of insulation to mountaintop maintenance buildings to prevent excessive heat loss.
- Replaced more than 418 hotel room patio doors with insulated versions and weather stripping.
- New insulated doors were installed throughout the Ski Lodge and the indoor pool area.
- Upgraded numerous boilers with newer high-efficiency boilers.
Water Usage
- To reduce the amount of water consumption, replaced 418 showerheads to low-flow models, reducing average flow from five gallons per minute to two and a half.
- Installed low-volume toilets in all hotel rooms.
- Encourage guests to use towel and washcloths more than once and giving them the option of having their sheets replaced after their stay is compete.
- Developed a potable water system to recycle water by treating and returning it to drainage areas to recharge the sources.
Snowmaking and Slope Activities
- Created a virtually closed loop water system for snowmaking.
- Captured in a series of collector ponds at the base of the mountain, which are filled from rain, run-off and melting snow
- Installed energy-efficient, low-emission air compressors
- Developed snow guns to achieve the most efficient water to air ratio in the industry and significantly lower the need for compressed air.
- Identified areas to run low-energy, gravity-fed snow guns to make snow without operating pumps.
- Eliminated the use of recreational motorized off-road vehicles. By doing so, the effects of soil erosion will be lessened and will keep our ski and snowboard terrain intact. Also, this will eliminate the disruption to stream beds and forests impacting fish and wildlife.
Paper Usage
- Purchase and support post-consumer products
- Eliminated the use of Styrofoam products in favor of biodegradable products.
- Replacing disposable utensils, plates and cups with reusable china in the employee cafeteria.
Cleaning Products
- Implemented the use of saltwater solutions
